About the Author

Laurence Libin, editor-in-chief of The Grove Dictionary of Musical Instruments (Oxford University Press), is honorary curator of Steinway & Sons, and emeritus curator of musical instruments at The Metropolitan Museum of Art (1973-2006), where he was first incumbent of the endowed Frederick P. Rose chair. Educated as a harpsichordist and musicologist at Northwestern University, the University of Chicago, and King's College, University of London, Mr. Libin has taught in the graduate schools of Columbia University and New York University, including the NYU Institute of Fine Arts, and lectures internationally. His work has been supported by grants from the National Endowment for the Arts, the National Endowment for the Humanities, the National Museum Act (Smithsonian Institution), the International Research and Exchanges (IREX) program of the U.S. Department of State, the National Antique and Art Dealers League, the Catherine Lorillard Wolfe Fund, CEC International Partners, the Likhachev Foundation, and other sources.

In addition to numerous exhibitions, Laurence Libin has produced two nationally syndicated radio series as well as many recordings from the Metropolitan Museum's collection, and has published more than 150 articles, reviews, catalogues, and monographs. He was co-editor of the 2008 and 2009 Organ Yearbooks. He is a frequent consultant to private collectors, museums, and cultural institutions worldwide, and a leading spokesman for historical preservation. In 2006 the Galpin Society (UK) awarded him the Anthony Baines Memorial Prize for services to organology, and in 2009 he received the Curt Sachs Award for lifetime achievement from the American Musical Instrument Society.

Mr. Libin is a Life Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts. He has been president of the Organ Historical Society, vice-president of the American Musical Instrument Society, and has served on the National Council of the American Musicological Society and on its Noah Greenberg and Howard Mayer Brown Award Committees, as a member of the Comité International des Musées et Collections d'Instruments de Musique, and on governing boards of the American Organ Archives and OHS Press. He has been a member of the editorial board of the American Recorder Society and of advisory councils of Red Cedar Chamber Music (Cedar Rapids, Iowa), the Medici Archive Project (Florence, Italy), the MusicaRussia Foundation, Early Music America, the New York Flute Club, the Boston Early Music Festival, the Boston Baroque and Classical Band orchestras, the Instituto de Órganos Históricos de Oaxaca (Mexico), and grant review panels of the National Endowment for the Humanities.

Stunningly Beautiful.

OMG! I ordered this book because I love Ms. Bychkova's work. I was expecting a few nice pictures and some commentary. What I wasn't expecting was to receive a book which was in itself a work of art. This book is sturdy, with silver gilded pages and a ribbon bookmark. It's thick, with tons of beautiful color photos of the dolls and lovely commentary by the artist which makes you feel as if she's shared her life with you. I'm so impressed, Ms Bychkova, you're amazing. This has become my most favorite book on dolls.

I ran across Marina Bychkova's artistically done ball joint dolls on Pinterest a while back then I found this book and decided to get it. What I love about her work the most besides the subtle nudity is the beautiful outfits these dolls wear. The subject matter is risqué not just because of the nudity but because the actual subject she based some of the dolls on. Paul Gifford has successfully presented the history of the hammered dulcimer in North America from the 1600's to the present. Full of photographs, illustrations, tuning charts, etc., this history effectively informs those interested in this beautiful traditional instrument about its history and its many variations. As the proprietor of Ardie's Handcrafted Hammered Dulcimers, I frequently get asked about old hammered dulcimers, and this is my first and primary reference tool. Well worth the price.

Love love love!!!

I have an absolute addiction to audio books which is how I found this author but this series doesn't start on audio books so I had to go back to ebook. Which doesn't happen often for me anymore. I am addicted! I seriously skip my much needed sleep so I can spend time with my book buds. If that doesn't tell you how amazing both this series and this author is I don't know what does. I am hoping I can now fall asleep and dream this story. Ya it's that amazeballs! Gotta download book 3 first though

A young love story with lots of supernatural elements. There are so many bad guys, you dont know who to trust. The plot takes many twists and unexpected turns. I am looking forward to reading the next book in this series. Im sure this will only get better.

I am reviewing the ninth edition (2006) of Dr. Baroody's book, Alkalize or Die. Dr. Baroody's book has helped me understand the relationship between acid-forming foods and alkaline-forming foods, yet I must say it required some level of discernment to sift the wheat from the chaff.

One of the positive features to Dr. Baroody's approach to healthful living is his recognition of each person's unique biochemistry. Throughout this book he continues to remind his readers that each person is an individual and therefore might experience variant results when compared to other people.

It is important to understand that Dr. Baroody's theories and principals are based as largely on his personal alternative health experiences (trial and error) as they are on any demonstrable medical science. It is also important to know that Dr. Baroody gives much credence to the metaphysical teachings of eastern spiritualism, which may be a detractor to some readers. In the book's introduction, Dr. Baroody writes, "My viewpoint is founded on ancient Hindu, Chinese, Tibetan, and Greco-European healing philosophies and on several great modern men in the field of health." One of these "great modern men" is Edgar Cayce, who is referenced as an authority many times throughout the book.

So long as the reader is a proponent of New Age and/or Eastern spiritualism, this book should be quite acceptable. For those of us who are more Western in their worldview, the book requires discernment to pick and choose what you care to take from it.

An example of how Dr. Baroody's metaphysical beliefs influence his dietary advice can be seen in his counsel for reducing the consumption of red meat: "The destructive emotion of slaughter is assimilated by the person who eats flesh." (pg. 63). For many, this statement might resonate well with their worldview, but for others this statement will likely be challenged as to it's applicability to the subject of acidity/alkalinity.

Dr. Baroody's experience in the alternative health field appears to be quite extensive. No doubt he has learned a lot from published medical research and other practitioners, yet much of what he proposes in this book is admittedly derived from his own experience; some of which he still doesn't fully understand himself (for example, read chapter 4 on the "Vagus Nerve"). Those readers who are looking for a book filled with footnotes and documented scientific research will be disappointed with this work.

What I found most helpful in the book is Dr. Baroody's exhaustive list of foods with a corresponding rating as to their alkaline-forming or acid-forming properties. Dr. Baroody abandons the conventional 0-7-14 pH scale in favor of a scale he developed to measure alkaline-forming and acid-forming foods. Dr. Baroody's scale (pg. 38) ranges from 0.5 to 7.5. All foods below 4.0 are acid-forming and all foods above 4.0 are alkaline-forming.

The chart I refer to above is alone worth the price of the book. Depending on the readers religious and scientific convictions, the rest of the book may or may not be appreciated.

It shouldn't be the only Android book on your shelf, but your collection should not be without it.

Pro Android 2 is aimed at developers who want to take Android to the next level. This large book serves as a manual for how to do almost anything on Android. The book starts by giving a refresher of the platform, and then quickly dives into explaining XML files, GUI layout and Views, and working with mapping. Building and consuming services are explained, giving the first example of working with Apache's HttpClient libs that I have seen in an Android book. Examples of working with the Telephony API, searching, using gestures, you name it. The book even offers an alternative way of creating applications using Titanium Mobile. Finally time is spent explaining the Android Marketplace and things you should know before making your application public.

The information contained in this book is at the same time enlightening and overwhelming. In just the first few chapters, I had already found better ways to handle several things in my own Android applications. That alone was worth the time spent reading this book.

Although the book was written by three different authors, I found the writing style and flow of the book well done and congruous.

The book explains that the intended audience should have previous exposure to developing on the Android platform and to Java, and they mean it. While an introduction is given to the various parts of an Android application, a new developer wouldn't be able to get enough understanding to use this book as a starting point for developing Android applications. Previous exposure to any number of beginning Android books is recommended before you attempt to tackle this one. The publisher suggest you start with Beginning Android 2.

If you are an Android developer, do yourself a favor and pick up this book. If you spend 2 minutes flipping through the various chapters, I promise you will walk out of the book store with Pro Android 2 in hand. My rating, 5 stars. The book delivers exactly what it advertises and does so in a manner that is enjoyable to read and very helpful.

Outstanding deep dive into Android 2.0

In my opinion, one of the weaknesses of the Android documentation from Google is that is does not highlight the associated components of the Android Operating System. Pro Android 2 provides those high level connections and provides real depth into the various parts of the API.

I found the coverage of the Android Platform, in the context of the evolution of computing, to be particularly insightful and engaging. And they quickly transition into an in depth explanation of what you will need to build real applications.

The chapter exploring the Structure of an Android Application clearly illustrates how the different development assets are wired together by the runtime. The chapters describing the OOB widgets, menus and layout are both very complete and easy to understand.

I was especially excited to read the sections on more advanced topics, including OpenGL, 2D Animations, and even WebKit / Titanium hybrid development.

Great Resource

This book is a great resource for developers that are new to Android programming. I had never built a droid app before. With this book, I was able to get up and running very quickly. The examples are excellent and the foundation that this book provides is invaluable. It covers all of the topics for virtually any application need, and then describes in detail how to get your new app on the market.
