About the Author
ANTHONY POWELL was born in 1905. After working in publishing and as a scriptwriter, he began to write for the Daily Telegraph in the mid-1930s. He served in the army during World War II and subsequently became the fiction reviewer on the TLS. Next came five years as literary editor of Punch. He was appointed a Companion of Honour in 1988. In addition to the twelve-novel sequence, A Dance to the Music of Time, Anthony Powell was the author of seven other novels, and four volumes of memoirs, To Keep the Ball Rolling. He died in March 2000.

Ehhhhh

I love A Dance to the Music of Time and sought out this early work of Powell's in the hope of recapturing the sparkling repartee and zest for living that makes Dance so delectable. Better luck next time. This slight (150 page) farce concerns a young British wastrel, Lushington (get it?), who, for lack of anything better, goes off on a slow steamer to a Northern Baltic country that has been recently liberated after the Great War (think, oh, I don't know, Latvia or something). There on the boat he meets most of the novel's principal characters: a down-at-the-heels count, a fake fat count who sells soap and a vamp countess. These tired drawing-room caricatures, which must have been cliched at the time, spend the rest of the novel wasting away and finally relieving the reader by dying from consumption, confrontation, revolution or irresolution (except for the fat count who steams back to England in the interest of soaping up the British Isles). There's a tiresome party or two with the kind of conversation that makes one wonder how did Powell become the writer who created those wonderful, festive scenes in Dance. I'm thinking he had some kind of literary equivalent of Paul's journey on the road to Damascus (or at least became a born-again writer). In any event, this book is strictly for hardcore Powellians (or, perhaps, pole-cats) interested in the great writer's roots and willing to forgive a youthful transgression into the wilds of stuffy, Northern European aristocracy.

A very great read!

I read this book right after Waugh's Brideshead Revisited, and this book, about half the length of the other, is far superior. I believe this was only Powell's second novel. A funny, confused protagonist named Lushington finds himself in a small former Soviet colony of beautiful society ladies, with ultimately tragic (but, yes, funny) and unsatisfying outcomes. He even blows his heroic welcome home party. It's Powell at his best, writing about parties, parties and more parties of the rich and famous, intertwined with real drama, a nice, tight mixture in a little book.

The tyrant Cleon is taken down by a lowly sausage-seller

"The Knights" is one of the comic masterpieces of Aristophanes, constituting a direct personal attack on Cleon. The level of invective and satire is pretty astounding, especially since this was only the fourth comedy written by Aristophanes. In his previous comedy, "The Archanians," a character had threatened to cut up Cleon into shoe-leather for the Knights, and in this play the comic playwright makes good on his promise. From satirizing the policies of Cleon's political party and capturing the miseries of war, Aristophanes turns to a personal attack on Cleon as a demagogue.
The comedy begins with two characters, Demosthenes and Nicias, who are caricatures of the historic orators who Aristophanes saw as following public opinion instead of truly leading the people like Pericles. The pair are slaves in the house of Demos, that is to say the citizens of Athens, and are complaining about the new slave, the Paplagonian ("the Tanner"), who represents Cleon and who controls "Demos" by even worst means than they ever did. So they decide to steal the oracles used to persuade Demos and learn that their enemy will be brought down by a sausage-seller. The next thing we know, a sausage-seller stumbles upon stage and the pair convince him to acting, promising him wealth, power, and the support of a thousand knights (who comprise the play's chorus).
At this point the Paphlagonian shows up and the rest of the play consists of mainly a series of agons between him and the sausage-seller in which the two try to out wit, out lie, and outlast each other to win the favor of Demos. The sausage-seller wins over the Demos and Cleon is condemned to sell sausages made with the meat of asses and dogs, always be drunk, to exchange foul language with prostitutes, and to drink nothing but dirty bath water. In the parabasis the chorus ignore Cleon and talk instated about what would happen to the poor tragic poet who wrote this comedy if Athens treats them the way they have other geniuses as they crow old. The big finale has the chorus singing the praises of the knights, their forefathers, the god Poseidon, and of horses (which are sacred to Poseidon).
Compared to "The Acharnians," it is clear "The Knights" is a much more bitter play, portraying the Paplagonian as an unprincipled, lying, cheating scoundrel. The legend is that no other comic dared to lampoon Cleon on stage and that Aristophanes played the role himself and instead of wearing a mask that would clearly represent the features of Cleon smeared his face with wine to represent the purple and bloated visage of the demagogue. The title, as is often the case with the work of Aristophanes, represents the chorus in the play. The Knights were one of the highest orders of citizens in Athens and embodied many of the aristocratic preferences and prejudices that Aristophanes saw as being outdated.
"The Knights" was the fourth play produced by Aristophanes, presented at the Len�an Festival in 424 B.C. We do not know much of his first two efforts, "The Revellers" and "The Babylonians," both of which are long lost, but the third comedy, "The Acharnians" was the first of his three great comedies dealing with the subject of the Peloponnesian War, along with "The Peace" and "Lysistrata." "The Knights" was awarded the first prize at the festival, but Cleon remained in power and therefore a subject for further barbs from Aristophanes.

A Work Of Poetic Genius By Leonard Cohen

When this book was first published in the mid-sixties, the New York Times reviewer said that he had discovered that James Joyce wasn't dead; he was alive and writing in Montreal under the name of Leonard Cohen. Younger fiction fans are likely ignorant of just how influential and omnipresent Leonard Cohen, a young Canadian Jew living in Montreal was in the late 1960s. He was a novelist/poet/songwriter/folksinger, running with the likes of Dylan, Eric Andersen, Paul Simon, Joni Mitchell, Judy Collins, Lou Reed, Van Morrison, etc. etc. etc. His poetry put to music reamins perhaps the most haunting and beautiful to come out of that fabled time. You've surely heard his work, but may not be aware of just how much he influenced his fellows. Here, however, is the ultimate portable testament to the sheer creative powers Cohen wields; Beautiful Losers.

The title comes from one of his earlier poems, which having a mysterious coda of "So you're the kind of vegetarian/ Who only eats roses/ Is that what you mean't/ with your beautiful losers?". Given that context, this title refers to the cast of incredibly beautiful losers at life's game in this fantastic cruise through Cohen's imagination and a stream of consciousness. I promise, this trip will be quite unlike anything you have ever experienced in print. It revolves around four characters, three of whom are dead, one of whom is a French-Canadian Indian nun who's been dead for over three hundred years, and who's currently being considered for cannonization by the Cathloic Church. From its opening question, "Catherine Tekakawitha, who are you?" to his final plea to "poor men, poor men such as we, they've gone and fled", this is a book that will leave you breathless.

This is one book you should run out to buy, but also is one for a long and slow reading. On virtually every page is a stream of word pictures best experienced fully and deliberately. Don't pick this one for your book report, kids, it is a four letter word tirade, and an exploration into the grittiest aspects of life. it is at turns hilarious, hysterical, profound, mystical, and absolutely unbelievable. For Cohen, "God is alive, and magic is afoot", and nowhere is his power of observation moe powerful than in this novel.

I remember having read it in hardcover in the mid-sixties and then passed it on to a friend, who of course passed it on and so on. So I lost the hardcover forever, but began a life of loving serious and well-written literature. This is a book for the ages, friend, one you can pick up and read a page at random at any moment and still enjoy completely. At the risk of committing the terrible sin of hyperbole, this is a wonderful work of art, and will last for centuries. Read it now, and then read it later. It ages very well. Like "Ulysses", or "Finnegan's Wake', or "Death In Venice", it is a one of a kind experience. Enjoy.

World of Beauty

Songwriter/singer/poet/novelist Leonard Cohen is a writer who, through the use of a few words alone, can send a thousand different emotions and images through your head. His writing is powerful and touching, though often too poetic. Beautiful Losers is, in fact, a poem disguised as a novel. It is a postmodernistic work of Canadian fiction that, although beautiful, refuses to make sense.
The story's nameless narrator is scarred by the death of his wife, Edith, and of his best friend, F. As the three were part of a very strange romantic triangle, the posthumous revelations the narrator comes to during the course of the story are highly revealing and often shocking. As he mourns his wife, he cannot hide the fact that he was also in love with F. and his strange view on life.
A historian in disguise, the narrator is also doing research on an Native saint named Catherine, who's story is an echo of the things the narrator has went through and is going through. As these four chracters entertwine, and as more and more painful secrets are revealed, we are forced into a chaotic world where sense does not exist, where order and sanity are always at stake.
A highly poetic effort, Beautiful Losers ins't a book that should be read quickly. Just like the prose, the reader should take his time while reading it. It's too easy to miss the great irony and humour behind all the darkness and sadness of the prose. Cohen created a world where surrealism, sexuality and violence are part of the ordinary, where order seems to fail with a shocking consistancy and where disorder seems to rule.

Magic is Afoot

Forget for a moment Cohen the poet, Cohen the prophet, Cohen the musician. The question remains: "Is Cohen a good novelist?"
The answer, suprisingly, is yes. Beautiful Losers can nowhere be described as coherent. It is, at best semi-lucid prose coupled with oblique folk references, a melding of a surrealist love story with a more complex overlay of mythology and cultural humility.
At the bottom level, this is a story about a widower, his bisexual best friend, and a dead wife who slept with both of them.
Somewhere else, this book becomes spiritual. Haunted by exotic visions of the Catherine Tekakwitha, the Iroquois Virgin, the narrator puts context into politics and spiritualism. For more than three decades, the authors' Graph Theory with Applications (1976) has served as perhaps the classic introduction to graph theory. With happy shock, the reader learns that Bondy and Murty have updated the book, doubling its size. Three decades would count as a long time in the life of any active scientific pursuit, but the original year of publication saw the solution to the four-color conjecture that catalyzed a vast revitalization of graph theory. Graph theory, moreover, now has intimate interactions with computer science, practical and theoretical: three decades ago, computer networks barely existed and the founding papers of complexity theory had just appeared. Connections between graph theory and probability have also undergone a revolution. In short, the passage of time has transformed this subject in these and other ways, and the authors have transformed their book accordingly. They do, by choice, largely omit the theory of graph minors (developed by Paul Seymour and Neil Robertson and followers), which certainly now deserves a monographic treatment of its own. Summing up: Recommended. Lower-division undergraduate through professional collections.

This book is a follow-on to the authors' 1976 text, Graphs with Applications. What began as a revision has evolved into a modern, first-class, graduate-level textbook reflecting changes in the discipline over the past thirty years... This text hits the mark by appearing in Springer’s Graduate Texts in Mathematics series, as it is a very rigorous treatment, compactly presented, with an assumption of a very complete undergraduate preparation in all of the standard topics. While the book could ably serve as a reference for many of the most important topics in graph theory, it fulfills the promise of being an effective textbook. The plentiful exercises in each subsection are divided into two groups, with the second group deemed "more challenging". Any exercises necessary for a complete understanding of the text have also been marked as such. There is plenty here to keep a graduate student busy, and any student would learn much in tackling a selection of the exercises... Not only is the content of this book exceptional, so too is its production. The high quality of its manufacture, the crisp and detailed illustrations, and the uncluttered design complement the attention to the typography and layout. Even in simple black and white with line art, it is a beautiful book.

Its explosive growth in recent years is mainly due to its role as an essential structure underpinning modern applied mathematics – computer science, combinatorial optimization, and operations research in particular – but also to its increasing application in the more applied sciences. The versatility of graphs makes them indispensable tools in the design and analysis of communication networks, for instance.

The primary aim of this book is to present a coherent introduction to the subject, suitable as a textbook for advanced undergraduate and beginning graduate students in mathematics and computer science. It provides a systematic treatment of the theory of graphs without sacrificing its intuitive and aesthetic appeal. Commonly used proof techniques are described and illustrated, and a wealth of exercises - of varying levels of difficulty - are provided to help the reader master the techniques and reinforce their grasp of the material.

A second objective is to serve as an introduction to research in graph theory. I must first give a huge thanks to the authors of this textbook (The Logic Book 5e) for writing such an elite introductory logic book. Now, there are two groups of persons whom will read this book. The first group consists of those who are required by their respective college through college coursework. The second group consists of those who are not required but nevertheless are interested in the subject. I belong in the second group. After declaring my major to be in mathematics, my degree plan required me to take an introductory proof course were the required textbook was "Mathematical proof: A transition to advanced mathematics" by Chartrand. The book just mentioned covers sentential and predicate logic in a mere 20 pages and somehow expected its audience to be expert proofers. I immediately ran to the library to seek for additional help in logic and ended up with the following textbooks at hand, "Introduction to logic" by Suppes, "Introduction to logic" by Copi, "Introduction to logic" Gensler, "Logic and Philosophy: A modern introduction" by Hausman, and "The Logic Book" by Bergmann. Out of the bunch, this textbook (The Logic Book 5e) drew my attention the most because its definitions were the most clear and every chapter had an outline summary. It also drew my attention because it covers metalogic, a topic not covered by the others. It took me about twelve hours to complete each of the chapter's exercises at a rate of 4 hours per day for a total of (12*11)= 132 hours of study time in 132/4 = 33 Days. Thus it took me 33 days to complete the entire book (11 Chapters). This book (the Logic Book) taught me how to convert an English argument into symbolic predicate form and from predicate form back to English. But the most important thing that the textbook taught me was to become an expert proofer in sentential and predicate logic, a skill require in mathematics(ZFC Axiomatic Set theory to be more explicit). I highly recommend this textbook to anyone interested in learning how to proof arguments from a given set of assumptions. There is now no excuse for a person not to know logic, especially when this textbook exists. Consider buying a used 5th edition to save money. Good luck on your Journey!

I Bought a 4th edition copy of this same text for my sister and cost me less than $5.00 including S&H (See The Logic Book (4th Edition)). Futhermore, the 4th edition is 99.99% identical to the 5th and 6th editions and yet 99.99% cheaper. Now, it doesn't take a person to know much math nor much logic to know that the 4th edition is a heck of a better deal. The same table of contents of The Logic Book (4th Edition) applies to both the 5th and 6th editions. You're welcome!

Good (but very basic) book. More breath than depth

I liked the book. it nice and simple and good for beginners.

One issue I found is that this book covers the the entire spark eco-system (spark core, spark sql, spark streaming, mllib) in a very brief way. it doesn't go deep into any of the topics. This makes it very similar to the spark programming guide on the web which also adopts a similar pattern.

What would have been nice if the author would have gone deep into spark-core. Upon reading this book, it didn't teach me anything more than the spark programming guide

This book aims to provide a “...concise and easy-to-understand tutorial for big data and Spark”. How does it fare?

Spark is increasing the tool of choice for big data processing, being much faster than Hadoop’s MapReduce. After putting Spark into a big data context, the book aims to cover Spark’s core library, together with its more specialized libraries for Streaming, Machine Learning, SQL, and Graphing.

The book is aimed at developers that are new to Spark, some general background programming knowledge required, but little else.

Chapter 1 Big Data Technology Landscape

This chapter opens with a discussion about the current big data age, with data as the lifeblood of organizations, and growing exponentially. The standard 3Vs definition of big data is explored (velocity, variety, volume). Traditional relational database management systems (RDBMS) are unable to process these large volumes in a timely manner – this is where the scalability of big data systems comes into its own.

Next, the chapter discusses some technologies that are either used with Spark, or Spark competes with. The first technology is Hadoop, this is fault tolerant and scalable, and runs on commodity hardware. The three major components of Hadoop are discussed: YARN (Yet Another Resource Negotiator), MapReduce (distributed processing model), and HDFS (Hadoop Distributed File System). Spark is increasingly being used in place of MapReduce owning to its faster speed. The section briefly discusses Hive, a data warehouse with a SQL like interface, Spark SQL is expected to supersede Hive on many systems.

The chapter continues with a look at some common binary formats for serializing (storing on disk) big data, and their pros and cons. Specifically Avro, Thrift, Protocol Buffers, and SequenceFile are examined. Next, some column storage formats, which have performance advantages when the client requires a subset of columns, were briefly discussed, namely: RCFile, ORC, and Parquet.

Then a brief overview of messaging systems is provided, together with the advantages of having a layer of abstraction between producers and consumers. Specifically, Kafka and ZeroMQ are discussed with the aid of useful supporting diagrams.

NoSQL is then examined. The various types of NoSQL databases have different aims to the traditional RDBMS, typically trading Atomicity, Consistency, Isolation, Durability (ACID) for scalability and flexibility. The specific NoSQL databases briefly discussed are Cassandra and HBase. I sometimes wonder if it is meaningful to group NoSQL databases together. Is it meaningful to divide sports into Football and NoFootball? Are all the NoFootball sports meaningful as a group?

The chapter ends with a look at some distributed SQL query engines, these do not use MapReduce batch jobs, and are thus more oriented to interactive querying. The engines briefly examined are: Impala, Presto, and Apache Drill.

This chapter provides an excellent overview of big data technology. It should be noted there are many more technologies than described, but the examples given are sufficient to explain the topic areas. This is possibly the best backgrounder to big data I’ve read.

The discussions are very well written, concise and clear, with helpful diagrams, and no wasted words. There’s a good flow between the topics, and useful links between chapters. There are website links for further information. These traits apply to all the chapters in the book.

This book aims to provide a “...concise and easy-to-understand tutorial for big data and Spark”, and clearly succeeds. The book is exceptionally well written. Helpful explanations, diagrams, practical step-by-step walkthroughs, annotated code, inter-chapter links, and website links abound throughout.

The book is aimed at developers that are new to Spark, and explains concepts from the beginning. If you work through the book you should become competent in the use of Spark, there is much more to learn of course, but this book gives a solid foundation in both core Spark and its major specialized libraries: Streaming, Machine Learning, SQL, and Graphing.

The book is based on workshops given by the author, and clearly the feedback from these has been useful in creating this book, since it seems to have answered all the questions I had.

This book provides everything you need to know to get started with Spark, explained in an easy-to-follow manner. If you want to learn Spark, buy this book. Highly recommended

Well Organized and informative book

This book is a very well written definitive overview of Spark. This is a great book for those who want to learn about spark but dont know where to start from.
Fundamentals are very well explained in the book for developers who are new to spark. It starts with great overview of big data technology and helps in building basics and then moves on to explore more advanced topics. The book covers Spark core and its specialized add-on libraries too. This book also contains a plenty of sample examples which are really useful. Even if you are new to the subject this book has enough information to get a developer started on spark projects.
In short this book is really well organized, very informative and easy to follow. Highly recommended .
