Best of the 3!
By A Customer
Paul Kidd has done it again and produced another winning title in the otherwise lacklustre Greyhawk Classics series. In addition, he has produced the finest outing of the Justicar and his wacky dungeoneering party. While the previous 2 books were great, Demonweb Pits feels more homogeneous in the progression of the story - it "flows" a lot better than WPM and Descent.
What sets the Justicar novels above the rest is that Kidd captures the feel of a good hack & slash roleplaying session with a excellent eye for witty detail yet without falling into the trap of taking his creations too seriously. The actions sequences are fast, colourful and imaginative, as if they had been lifted from a John Woo script. There is also a good deal of character development progressing from the previous 2 novels, even a bit of romance (wow, a D&D novel with sex & violence as opposed to just violence!).
One small note, this story REALLY tears apart previous depictions of Lolth and the dark elves as suave, mysterious and elegant supervillains! If you love drow, try not to be too offended!
On all counts a must have!

Fun and adventure all rolled in a cute fairy butt
By ReindeerEmu
This third book was awwesome! Escalla and Justicar are back most definately. The challenge of taking on Lloth and her demonic horde was both exciting and still had the sheer hilarity of the previous books. The ending was a bit much but was still true to the E&J style that's been prevalent throughout the 3 books. I can't wait to read more!!

Another winner, but isn't it rather munchkin?
By snowy
Spoiler Spoiler Spoiler
The fairy is back, and boy does she have plans, big naughty plans.
And who should be interfering with her plans and her girl talk with the sphinx Enid but femme fatale Lloth who gated in a massive horde to the world of greyhawk to invade, plunder, destroy, invade, plunder, destroy, invade, plunder, destroy, ..., well, you get the idea.
Unfortunately, the book has several illogical development. Even with Flanaess in general turmoil in the aftermath of the Greyhawk wars, could such an invasion be unnoticed and unheeded by the powers that be ?
Second, Justicar and his band certain came a long way since their adventure in White Plume mountains, but to take on Lloth and her minions in her lair? While the author did not overload the characters with too many powerful weapons (staff of lich, wand of frost, super-sword Benellux, sentient hell-hound pelt etc doesn't seem to count for too much against demons), readers get a dissatisfied feeling that the foes they faced were just
too wimpy. But then, this is Greyhawk, not Forgotten Realms or
Dragonlance.
However, breaking Enid from the afterlife was just a tad too much.
Otherwise, it is a rather interesting book, with realisitic development between characters, romance, seduction, anger, possessiveness, honour and what-nots. The author gave a good account of Justicar's past and his recognition of the flaws of his previous mentor Recca. Romance between human and sphinx is a new avenue, but so far, little words were used as judiciously possible, after all, what can a teenager say to an all-wise sphinx? Even Cinders have some development of its own, learning several suprising tricks.
While readers would enjoy the characterisation, veterans would feel cheated by the less than titanic battle between the rangers' band and the queen of the demonweb pit.

Kant: Critique of Practical Reason (Cambridge Texts in the History of Philosophy)From Cambridge University Press

The Critique of Practical Reason is the second of Kant's three Critiques, one of his three major treatises on moral theory, and a seminal text in the history of moral philosophy. Originally published three years after his Groundwork of the Metaphysics of Morals, the Critique provides further elaboration of the basic themes of Kant's moral theory, gives the most complete statement of his highly original theory of freedom of the will, and develops his practical metaphysics. This revised edition of Kant's Critique of Practical Reason - which contains Mary Gregor's acclaimed translation - is now the authoritative translation of this work. A substantial and lucid introduction by Andrews Reath places the mains themes of the Critique in the context of Kant's moral theory and his critical system. For this edition, the introduction has been revised and the guide to the secondary reading completely updated.

Undeniable: How Biology Confirms Our Intuition That Life Is Designed, by Douglas Axe

Named A Best Book of the Year by World Magazine

Throughout his distinguished and unconventional career, engineer-turned-molecular-biologist Douglas Axe has been asking the questions that much of the scientific community would rather silence. Now, he presents his conclusions in this brave and pioneering book. Axe argues that the key to understanding our origin is the “design intuition”—the innate belief held by all humans that tasks we would need knowledge to accomplish can only be accomplished by someone who has that knowledge. For the ingenious task of inventing life, this knower can only be God.

Starting with the hallowed halls of academic science, Axe dismantles the widespread belief that Darwin’s theory of evolution is indisputably true, showing instead that a gaping hole has been at its center from the beginning. He then explains in plain English the science that proves our design intuition scientifically valid. Lastly, he uses everyday experience to empower ordinary people to defend their design intuition, giving them the confidence and courage to explain why it has to be true and the vision to imagine what biology will become when people stand up for this truth.

Armed with that confidence, readers will affirm what once seemed obvious to all of us—that living creatures, from single-celled cyanobacteria to orca whales and human beings, are brilliantly conceived, utterly beyond the reach of accident.

Our intuition was right all along.

Review
“From childhood everyone directly grasps that life is designed - until they’re talked out of it by a culture saturated with materialism. Using the latest science, molecular biologist Douglas Axe shows why you don’t have to be an expert to trust your firm knowledge of the wonderful design of life.” (Michael J. Behe, author of Darwin's Black Box)

“Undeniable is an important addition to the debate on the origins of life. It provides a middle way between religious and scientific explanations of how life began. A must-read for everyone who is interested in the origins of our universe.” (The Washington Book Review)

“Great scientists are as much artists as scientists. Enchanted by the beauty of the world, they see through ideologies to facts. In this engaging book, Axe uses ‘common science’ to consider the biggest mystery: To what or to whom do we owe our existence? I greatly enjoyed it.” (Dean Koontz, New York Times bestselling author)

“Douglas Axe’s Undeniable is bold, insightful and world-changing. It’s also a joy to read. I recommend it highly!” (Phillip E. Johnson, Professor Emeritus of Law at U. C. Berkeley and author of Darwin on Trial)

“Highly rigorous yet passionate, lyrical, forthright, refreshingly brief and accessible, Undeniable is an urgently needed addition to the library of books on intelligent design.” (Evolution News)

“In Undeniable we are privy to a first-hand account of the evidence for intelligence and the painful professional cost of swimming against the flow of accepted but un-proven truth. A must-read.” (Gerald Schroeder, author of The Science of God and God According to God)

“Microbiologist Douglas Axe makes a case for intelligent design over and against the dominant secular materialism that pervades the scientific community. Whether one is an atheist, agnostic, or a theist, Undeniable adds another exciting voice to a lively debate.” (Reading Religion, A Publication of the American Academy of Religion)

“Probably the most engaging book I have read in the past ten years, because of Dr. Axe’s clear explanations and profound insights. This is an important book, perhaps the best one in existence, for anyone who takes origins questions seriously, whatever their perspective.” (Chuck Garner, Professor of Organic Chemistry at Baylor University)

“Axe has carefully crafted a case that strongly favors our human intuition that life was designed, demonstrating why unguided evolution is improbable in the extreme. This book’s power to convince surpasses that of everything I’ve read on origins science in my sixty-five years as an engineer, biophysicist, and physiologist.” (Mark C. Biedebach, Ph.D., Professor Emeritus, Dept. of Biological Sciences, California State University, Long Beach)

“Undeniable makes a compelling case by a molecular biologist that living organisms were designed by an intelligent agent, i.e. God. A decisive blow at the foundations of the materialistic explanations of the origin and diversity of life’s forms that have dominated biology for 200 years.” (Donald Ewert, PhD, Director of Research at the Hough Ear Institute and Former Wistar Institute Research Scientist)

“Douglas Axe is one of the very few experimental scientists who has used his skills to test the validity of evolutionary mechanisms as a source of inventions. Here, he concludes that we can trust our common [universal] design intuition; it is supported by science, whereas evolutionary stories are anti-science.” (Matti Leisola, D.Sc. Professor Emeritus of Bioprocess Engineering, Aalto University, Finland)

“Many say we must accept that life is ultimately due to a grand cosmic accident, that evolution is an unguided purposeless process and that we must deny our experience. Axe describes why the design we see in nature fits with scientific observation as well as with our ‘undeniable’ experience.” (Russell W. Carlson, Professor Emeritus, Department of Biochemistry & Molecular Biology, University of Georgia)

“Axe performs a remarkable act of intellectual jiu-jitsu, finding evidence of design in the uttermost molecular details of life, those that were supposed to banish antiquated notions of design. No matter what side of the design debate you happen to be on, it’s worth reading, engaging and debating.” (J Scott Turner, Professor of Biology, SUNY ESF, Syracuse, New York)

“Undeniable is a marvelous book, both engaging and convincing-a true masterpiece.” (Marcos Eberlin, Professor of Chemistry at University of Campinas, member of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences)

“’Religion vs. science’ conflicts are generally depicted in popular culture as battles between narrow-minded bigots and tolerant truth-seekers. In recent decades, though, this narrative has arguably been turned on its head. Douglas Axe knows this first-hand, and in Undeniable, presents his objections to the theory of evolution.” (The Jewish Press)

Whether one is an atheist, agnostic, or a theist, Undeniable adds another exciting voice to a lively debate. (Reading Religion)

From the Back Cover

“To what or to whom do we owe our existence? This has to be the starting point for people who take life seriously—whether scientists or not. We cannot rest without the answer because absolutely everything of importance is riding on it.”—from Undeniable

Throughout his distinguished and unconventional career, engineer-turned-molecular-biologist Douglas Axe has been asking the questions that much of the scientific community would rather silence. Now, he presents his conclusions in this brave and pioneering book. Axe argues that the key to understanding our origin is the “design intuition”—the innate belief held by all humans that tasks we would need knowledge to accomplish can be accomplished only by someone who has that knowledge.

Lastly, he uses every-day experience to empower ordinary people to defend their design intuition, giving them the confidence and courage to explain why it must be true and the vision to imagine what biology will become when people stand up for this truth.

Armed with that confidence, readers will affirm what once seemed obvious to all of us—that living creatures, from single-celled cyanobacteria to orca whales and human beings, are brilliantly conceived, utterly beyond the reach of accident.

Our intuition was right all along.

Challenges the conventional view
By The Professor
Undeniable: How Biology Confirms Our Intuition That Life Is Designed, begins by relating a story that illustrates a theme of the book, namely social pressure is a major factor influencing science. He tells of a graduate class exam question at Caltech that asked “Which of the biological macromolecules is apt to be the first living molecule?” Axe knew where this question was going, and answered it in the way the professor wanted, then added he did not believe that any molecule could be the first form of life. For his opinion, he had points deducted, noting that “we as students were expected not only to know current thinking in biology but also to accepted it without resistance.” Axe added that “I had learned my lesson. The stream of scientific consensus flows with an almost irresistible current” This is indoctrination, not education. Professors should be challenging students to evaluate and reason about issues, not just mindlessly repeat what they are told. And this happened at one of the most elite colleges in the world! Axe then recounts meeting a distinguished scientist, a former friend, in Cambridge University, England, where he was a research scientist from 1990 to 2002. Their conflicting views on origins fractured their formerly good relationship. During this chance meeting, Axe noted, we settled for something less then closure. At least Axe tried to reaffirm their friendship even if his former friend did not. After relating other events, Axe concluded that the issue of origins depends less on facts than it does on social pressure. The rest of the book reviewed these facts, many of which are well documented in the scientific literature.

Truth...Refreshingly non-politically correct, bold, and supremely evidenced.
By A Customer
Recommend for Christians struggling to answer the ever-present proclamation from the scientific "community", Hollywood, and the media that science and evolution disprove creation (To the contrary!). Also recommended for non-Christians who have been misled by the biased and demonstrably false teachings spewed from the anti-God pulpits of Academia. An eye-opening and wonderful read!

All biology students should read this book!
By Dave J P
I can see why this is a best-seller. The author leads the reader step by step to a profound and inevitable appreciation that organic functional systems (what Michael Behe calls "irreducible complexity" and William Dembski and Stephen Meyer call "specified complexity") are so astronomically improbable that it is physically impossible for them to have arisen in the absence of intelligent design. There is no way that naturalistic evolution (neo-Darwinism) can survive this juggernaut of logic, if its proponents were even sufficiently open-minded to consider the irrefutable arguments. Of course, they won't, because they have careers devoted to maintaining the dictatorial status quo of philosophical materialism. It is a sham that something hardly even counting as a valid scientific theory (supported with no solid empirical evidence beyond imaginary speculation) has been imposed on school students for decades, ensuring the perpetuation of an indoctrinated populace, shorn of confidence in its native ability to reason logically with what the author labels as scientific common sense.

Death is Not so Simple
By Robert S. Corrington
In this brief, but brilliant, text on the afterlife, the third in a series of Manuals written by Besant and Leadbeater between 1892 and 1896, Besant presents the theosophical perspective on the various stages undergone by the soul after the death of the body. Her writing is clear, focused, and careful as it introduces technical terminology from the Sanskrit. The basic model is straightforward: first the body dies as its energy system (the etheric double) leaves it behind; as this body in turn dissipates, the astral body solidifies into seven layers that must each in turn dissipate before the soul can move on (all of this in the realm of Kamaloka--the desire realm); finally, the soul rises up to its highest mental level and enters a realm of peaceful dreaming (Devachan) where it regathers its energies before becoming incarnate yet again. Besant raises the question: if reincarnation is true, why can't we remember our past lives? Her answer is fascinating; namely, that we can only remember the unconscious potencies of our past lives and deeds when we attain the highest levels of awareness in this life--levels that give us access to the hidden material that can only appear when the conditions for useful memory permit. The analogy here is to the life of the Buddha in which he was only able to remember his past lives at the moment when his final enlightenment was unfolding.
This Manual is a little gem and it is highly recommended for those who believe that the soul survives the death of the body--for it is one thing to believe in immortality, it is another to attempt to delineate just what the post-death state might be like. Annie Besant has done as well as anyone I know of in doing so. Readers of this volume will certainly want to read the other six in the series.

A Masterpiece on the Afterlife
By James Hobbs
This is a true masterpiece. I strongly recommend this book. I got so much out of it. The things I liked the most about this book were the points about our immortal consciousness, the afterlife, and the evolution of the soul and how what we do in this life affects the next one. I'm very interested in the afterlife and the evolution of the soul, and I thought the author gave excellent and very knowledgeable explanations for these things. It's good to know that we have nothing to fear when the time comes to shed our bodies, that death is just another way of moving forward, and Besant's advice on what we can do in this life to beneficially affect our soul's evolution in the next life is invaluable. This book answers a lot of very important questions, including ones that I have had for some time. It's been a real blessing to me.

The Greatest Mysteries Explained
By John Drake
Besant has lifted the veil off of death and shown us that we have nothing to fear. This is a beautiful work that will help anyone even beginners to understand and grow on their path to their full divine potential. It's is an excellent book for people seeking truth and the perfection that we are all meant to achieve. Besant has indeed found the truth and handed us the keys to the greatest of mysteries in this comprehensive masterpiece.
This excellent book explains death as a process of merely disrobing and details the journey of the immortal conscious part of us once we have left our physical body. It explains the various states we may end up in, and most importantly, tells us how we can affect our ascension after death into a higher state while still in this life. Besant shows us how to truly free ourselves in this life and the next. She explains what life really is, and it is not what most think. She shows us how leaving our physical body is not the end but merely a casting away of our fetters.
I benefitted immensely from this book, which I believe everyone should read. It's absolutely jam-packed with revelations of monumental significance. I learned so much from it. There is always something new to learn and I'm grateful whenever I find a new gem. I firmly believe I was led to this book, which is an amazing and rare find.
This is a book that I intend to recommend to all my friends, and I will have to pick up more books on reincarnation and the afterlife now that I've found so many vital truths in this one. I highly recommend this book if you are serious in any way about the mysteries that lie beyond the veil.
