From Shame to Fame--A woman for all seasons!

Tina Turner is a woman for all seasons. But it was the life she was forced to live by and with her ex husband Ike that was truly shameful. No woman deserves that kind of subjection, mistreatment--that kind of life! But thank God she was and is a strong woman. She never gave up and, rightly so, rose to fame after she closed the doors on her ever so destructive and tumultuous relationship/marriage

I TINA, tells the Tina Tuner (Born as Anna Mae Bullock) story from birth to individual fame. The crux of the story is her abusive relationship with her ex husband Ike Turner and how she found the strength to drag herself out of the almost endless cycle of battery to freedom. Once freed, she stood on her feet, made a life for herself and family and rose to much deserved fame. She is now that great Ms. Tina Turner as we know her. Many who never heard of or read her story would be amazed to know what this woman of strength went through and somehow survived!

Tina's recount of her life with Ike was impressive. I see a woman of strength and good virtues, who at one point of her life was rendered helpless but not hopeless; a woman of good values, kind and considerate heart, unselfish. I enjoyed her candor, her sweet modesty, sincerity and of course the great sense of humor, even in telling the ugly tales of the past.

Some parts of the story are `hard' to read because of the vivid recollection of the battery that took place on poor Tina's body. I nevertheless recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a good and sincere story from the heart and especially to women who have been battered or are going through a battering or abusive relationship. I trust you find the courage to leave immediately!

Tina Turner tells us every bump in the road to a life that is happy now. She went through the hard times, raised children, lived with a man who was mean to her and used her. But she came out on top!! An inspiration to all women and young girls everywhere.

Great book about a wonderful living legend Wayne White. The guy is approachable, kind, funny, articulate and dedicated to making art that anyone can appreciate. It's really funny when art snobs try to pigeonhole Wayne...the critics almost always come around after they take their nose out of the air and look at the body of his work. An American Treasure.

Brilliant, hilarious

Wayne White's work is amazing in its ability to make you think while making you laugh, and sometimes making you cringe in discomfort of the shared feeling. He's a master of sublime wit. I wish I could line every all of my home with his work and walk the world through to appreciate his brilliance. Alas, the book will have to suffice.

"This Kind of War:" the story of the Korean War from the individual soldier's perspective.

Before this year, I knew very little about the Korean War. Now I know a lot more about what is called “the forgotten war,” thanks to two books on the subject that I’ve read over the last two months. Earlier this week, I finished “This Kind of War: The Classic Military History of the Korean War” by T.R. Fehrenbach.

The story Fehrenbach tells his story primarily through the perspective of the individual soldiers who fought on the front lines of the war. He describes the living hell of some of the great battles of the war, including Seoul, Osan, Inchon, Imjin River, Chosin (Changjin) Reservoir, Bloody and Heartbreak Ridges, Pork Chop Hill, and others.

Fehrenbach wrote “This Kind of War” about ten years after he served in Korea as an Army officer. Although doesn’t mention his Korean War experiences anywhere in his book, Fehrenbach’s disillusionment with how the war was fought at all levels fairly drips from each page. His main criticism is that the United States was very much unprepared to fight a major land war in Asia – or anywhere else, for that matter. The Truman Administration had spent the five years after the end of World War II gutting defense budgets, reducing military personnel levels, and depriving the armed forces of the essential equipment they needed in order to win. Soldiers – especially those stationed in Japan, the ones who would end up being sent to Korea – had lost their fighting edge due to inadequate training and soft living.

Fehrenbach brings to life many of the most famous historical events of the war, including President Harry Truman’s firing of General Douglas MacArthur, the death of General Walton Walker in a motor vehicle accident, and – most interestingly – the plight of prisoners of war (POWs) on both sides. Relying on interviews with American POWs who survived captivity, Fehrenbach paints a devastating picture of the sub-human conditions these soldiers were forced to endure. The author also gives a detailed account of the uprising in the United Nations POW camp on Koje-do Island, and how that rebellion by North Korean and Chinese prisoners was suppressed.

“This Kind of War” is an excellent account of the Korean War. I thoroughly enjoyed reading it, and I learned a great deal from it. Highly recommended.

The Classical Narrative of the Korean War

The classic narrative of the Korean by a combat veteran. Fehrenbach's discussion of the lack of military preparedness, diplomatic bumbling, and for the most part, the bedrock heroism of the American and UN troops engaged has lessons for us today. He also gives credit to the ROK army for its major role in the war and the heroism of its troops. Korea marked a new kind of war that America did not adjust to very well. It set a pattern for the time of limited wars we have subsequently fought. We have yet to fully recognize these wars are different. They require different definitions of winning and national leaders who can effectively communicate their importance to the American public. Without such national leadership the national will will not support these wars. This Kind of War is as relevant today as it was when first published in the early 1960s. It is a must read for anyone interested in understanding the Korean War from American military, political and diplomatic perspectives.

Lessons learned and those not learned

I have not read it in many years. I bought this copy to replace one I gifted to a friend. It is a good read for anyone who wants to understand the dynamics of USA and United Nations involvement in world affairs. It also provides some insight into the disastrous consequences for the those who serve their country. Throwing troops in summer uniform into lethal winder conditions, with inadequate weapons and supplies is inexcusable. As a veteran of the Vietnam conflict I am happy to say that although we did not learn all the lessons of Korea, we did, at least, take much better care of our troops.

More of a DIY/idea book than a DIY/craft book.

Fashion wise, this is a decent book with a decent taste. However, it does't fulfill its purpose as a DIY/Craft book. There are nice "step-by-step" photos try to explain to you how to DIY things, and yes! That was an quotation mark which mean it is not as thorough as you may expect from a DIY/craft book. If you just start DIY completely from scratch, I wouldn't recommend this book to you because you won't find any details of HOW to sew on, but a photo of a hand holding a needle and a thread that tells you' well, you need sew this on'. If you have the basic DIY savvy (like sewing skills both hand stitch and machine), then this is a great idea book for you because they do have some great DIY ideas in there, but then again not Wow-must-have great.

Religions are founded on less, and Hogan's detailed analyses and illustrated demonstrations of grip, stance, posture, and the two basic components of the swing make up a sacred book. Though its very simplicity seems dated, this is the tome of technique that should serve as the foundation of every golf library.

About the Author
Ben Hogan discovered golf as a fifteen-year-old caddie. He turned pro at seventeen, joined the tour full-time as a nineteen-year-old in 1931, and has won nine pro majors. A four-time PGA Player of the Year, he is one of only four golfers to win all four professional majors. At forty-one, he won five of six tournaments, including the Masters, U.S. Open and the British Open. Hogan died at eighty-four�in 1997 in his home in Fort Worth.

A great read with excellent graphics!

Hogan's book is a short, but comprehensive analysis of the golf swing. His stated purpose of giving the average weekend golfer the tools to develop a repeatable golf swing has, in my opinion, been met. The fundamentals he espouses are few, and simple enough to implement without causing one to overthink. I found his views about grip and stance, and their importance in setting up the rest of the swing, particularly helpful. If you're a student of the game, this book is a prerequisite before reading the multitude of expert analyses of Hogan's swing that are available elsewhere. The advanced golfer interested in developing his/her knowledge of shaping shots and ball flight won't find information here. But if you're like me and want to develop better consistency of contact with all your clubs and eliminate anxiety as you stand over the ball, then this book is for you.

Read this book and this book only and save yourself time and money

Just the stuff on the grip alone will help your game dramatically. Word of caution a lot of so called golf gurus will tell you stuff that directly goes against perhaps the greatest manual for golfing ever made. Who are you going to trust, I would build my game around this book before I would any guy on youtube.

On a personal note, some of the stuff seems like it would be easier to apply or meant for shorter players in stature as Hogan was, and also it was obviously written before the time where we see the kind of equipment with graphite etc we see today. None the less Hogan was able to hit the ball well over 300 yards on consistent basis.

Best Book Ever On Golf

Before I write this, let me say that my son, my daughter, and myself are all mid-single digit handicappers and the kids had been through 2 1/2 years of private lessons as well as a lot of tournament golf.

Okay, so this is the best golf book ever, and I can't believe it took me 16 years to buy this. The kids and I unanimously agree that this book not only supports what they've been taught in their lessons, but actually does a better job of explaining the principles than their $80/hour instructor. We all refer back to this book from time to time.

Mr. Hogan does an excellent job of explaining what he wants you to do, how to do it, and why you should do it. And if you have never read any of Hogan's writing, you're in for a treat. Yes he can go deep with the explanations, but his writing style is like poetry. All three of us shot our best rounds ever within two months of reading this book, and my son (finally) started taking home trophies, as well as winning a very competitive end of season tournament.
