Review
"I'm a huge admirer of the authors' excellent work. This book reflects their considerable clinical experience and provides great content, engaging writing, and enduring wisdom." Â John C. Norcross, Ph.D., ABPP, Distinguished Professor of Psychology, University of Scranton "The most recent edition of Clinical Interviewing is simply outstanding. It not only provides a complete skeletal outline of the interview process in sequential fashion, but fleshes out numerous suggestions, examples, and guidelines in conducting successful and therapeutic interviews. Well-grounded in the theory, research and practice of clinical relationships, John and Rita Sommers-Flanagan bring to life for readers the real clinical challenges confronting beginning mental health trainees and professionals. Not only do the authors provide a clear and conceptual description of the interview process from beginning to end, but they identify important areas of required mastery (suicide assessment, mental status exams, diagnosis and treatment electronic interviewing, and work with special populations). Especially impressive is the authors' ability to integrate cultural competence and cultural humility in the interview process. Few texts on interview skills cover so thoroughly the need to attend to cultural dimensions of work with diverse clients. This is an awesome book written in an engaging and interesting manner. I plan to use this text in my own course on advanced professional issues. Kudos to the authors for producing such a valuable text."Â Derald Wing Sue, Ph.D., Professor of Psychology and Education, Teachers College, Columbia University "This 6th edition of Clinical Interviewing is everything we've come to expect from the Sommers-Flanagan team, and more! Readers will find all the essential information needed to conduct a clinical interview, presented in a clear, straightforward, and engaging style. The infusion of multicultural sensitivity and humility prepares the budding clinician not only for contemporary practice, but well into the future. Notable strengths of the book are its careful attention to ethical practice and counselor self-care. The case studies obviously are grounded in the authors' extensive experience and bring to life the complexities of clinical interviewing. This is a `must-have' resource that belongs on the bookshelf of every mental health counselor trainee and practitioner."Â Barbara Herlihy, PhD. NCC, LPC-S, University Research Professor, Counselor Education Program, University of New Orleans

A Career-Long Resource
By X. Fossor
Every so often you come across a resource that stays with you throughout your career. It's not because you NEED to have it as a reference it's because you WANT to have it nearby as a reference. "Clinical Interviewing" is one such resource.
I started my association with this book with the 4th edition (Amazon verified purchase). It got me through most of my (second career) graduate professional counseling program until the switch-over to DSM-5 meant an "upgrade" to the 5th edition (also purchased here on Amazon). Since DSM-5 is still the current version why move up to this new 6th edition?
The "bonus" digital content used to be included on a provided DVD. With the 5th edition the digital content moved online and it remains so with this 6th edition. This 6th edition is almost 200 pages larger/longer than the 4th edition and about 70 pages longer than the 5th edition. The big jump in content between the 4th and 5th editions clearly was the result of the move from DSM-IV TR to DSM-5. So what about the additional pages from the 5th to the 6th?
This is a bit perplexing. Use the "Look Inside" feature to check out p. xiv. You'll see that the authors state the 6th edition is 15% leaner. Clearly that doesn't mean page count (even when you account for pages devoted to the references the "meat" is still about 50 pages longer than the 5th edition). But let's go with the 15% leaner statement (in the end, it's really not all that important).
Let's get my perpetual gripe out of the way: college texts are way too expensive. I've spent over $350 for my copies/editions of this book. So I'm naturally very annoyed at the $103.18 price tag (Amazon price at the time of this review). (To be fair, though, it's not outrageous (at all) as far as college texts go. Rather sad statement of affairs, but that's a different review/story.)
Price aside (and rant aside), this is a jewel of a reference. The online video content and other resources are first-rate and take quite a lot of the sting out of the price tag.
In the end, many (if not most) of this book's buyers will be required to buy this book. If so, no worries. According to the authors every chapter has been revised and where substantial updates were required they were made. For example, I like the reworking of Chapter 15 (now titled, "Electronic and Telephonic Interviewing").
Bottom line: buy this book, dive into this book, put this book down and pick it up again, and certainly mark it up. Also, use the code (found on the inside of the back cover) and take advantage of the online resources. But whatever you do don't put it away once your class is over or once you've graduated. This is one of those books you'll find yourself going back to (until, of course, the next edition comes along!).
5 stars.

I used the fifth version of this book in Grad School, so when I saw the sixth book available for review I was excited to check it out. Version sixth has some great updates, including links to videos that can be watched showing clinical interviewing techniques. These are so great for new counselors starting out, as many of us don't regular get to see other therapists in action.
Clinical Interview is one of those textbooks that you keep on your shelf and refer back to as needed. Highly recommended.
