Beautifully written and incredibly helpful

I'm a designer who has always wished to be a better writer. I've read tons of blog posts, half-read academic-writerly books that made me feel like I wasn't paying enough attention in college, and purchased in earnest how-to's that serve mostly as dust curation tools for my shelf. Nothing has ever really stuck.

This is the first book on writing I've read that is practical, approachable, and project oriented. I was able to understand processes that make going about writing less intimidating and more clear. I think most importantly it's given me structured ways to approach what I write and think about what I'm communicating. Nicole and Kate have written a great book that is immensely helpful and fun to read. Thank you!

There needs to be more books like this.

This book is beautiful, clear and refreshing. One of the things I really appreciate is the small illustrations throughout the book that allow the mind to rest while absorbing their concepts. I appreciate the background of both of the authors and how one works freelance and so has exposure to lots of businesses, while the other works for MailChimp and understands working inside of a larger innovative company.

The web moves so fast that it's hard to keep up with the latest designs and best practices. From what I've seen, the majority of the most current best practices are in blog posts, and some are in books from A List Apart and Smashing Magazine - but there's not enough out there. I couldn't find any design books on flat web design updated for 2014, but scores of blog posts. What makes this book stand out is that it's current, written by professionals, concise and easy to grasp the concepts, and just beautiful through and through. I hope the authors continue to write and can inspire designers in their field to create books like this.

An excellent introduction to Bible stories

This is a great book to introduce Bible stories to very young children. The print is large with only a few words on each page. The illustrations are very bright using mainly primary colors. Research has shown that beginning readers enjoy rhymes and my son is no exception. The stories hit the high points and cover the major events in the Bible. This is definitely a bedtime favorite that can lead to much more indepth discussions down the road!

I have purchased five copies of this book and three of the next level rhyme bible. We were given one when my son was two. He requested it every night for at least a year. The rhymes are clever and lighthearted while telling some of the fundamental stories of the Bible.

It's Alive! It's Alive

I did my usual tricks--printed documents from the Internet, watched YouTube "how to" videos.....and after several days of hacking, I was a dumb as when I started. So I bought the Kindle edition of Meloni's book, called it up on the left monitor via the Kindle reader and worked through the text line-by-line on the right monitor. Within a couple of hours I had a working local host complete with MySQL, php, WordPress and other things I guess I can't live without! And better yet, I know what all of that crap is and how to run it! Now I can concentrate on learning how to build my web site in the privacy of my own mind!

Not for newbies

From the Introduction: "The lessons that delve into programming with PHP assume no previous knowledge of the language." The author starts out well, but this book quickly runs into a steep learning curve. A lot of the advice in this book is 'RTFM' - Read The * Manual. I did read the manuals, but bought this book to understand how the pieces fit together. I may have to purchase a PHP-only textbook to understand this book.

The code for the examples in the book is on the accompanying CD, and can be downloaded from [...]. Some of the code necessary for the "hands on" MySQL and PHP chapters was not provided. There are no instructions on how to load the sample_queries.sql file in chapter 17. This would have made it easier than spending hours chasing down my own coding errors (as the author mentioned elsewhere in the book). Without proper working code, it is not possible to follow the "hands on" examples as you progress through the book. Although is is good to learn proper coding by doing, a backup file on the disk (or in the download) would have relieved some frustration.

As a Windows user, I would like to have seen more Windows-specific examples throughout the book, rather than one mention in the early chapters. MAC users may have this same wish. Repetition aids learning.

There are a lot of "cookie cutter" instructions in the book, but the author still assumes that the readers understands what they are doing. Some parts of the code examples are not well explained, and some not at all.

This book serves as a good introduction to Apache, MySQL, and PHP, but falls short of adequetly explaining any of them. A "Teach Yourself" textbook should do just that.

I don't usually write reviews, but I found this book to meet my needs. For those who are thinking about buying this book, I would suggest learning how XAMPP and how MYSQL work. I was able to do the exercises without a problem because I took a PHP MYSQL course. I wanted to learn how to make an e-commerce website and this has given me the tools to get started. I know how to make a CMS system with MYSQL/ PHP and wanted to integrate a store with the CMS. Now, I know how to do it thanks to this book.

Thorough and very detailed tutorial, not a "designers' handbook".

This book makes it easy to understand the fundamentals of chassis geometry and dynamics.
The different forces acting on the car during acceleration, braking, cornering and when the suspension is compressed, are explained. How these forces affect handling, due to lack of rigidity of various parts of the car is thoroughly explained. There is much focus on:
* live rear axle (stiff), as opposed to independent
* round/oval track requirements
* rear wheel drive
There is not so much focus on (or neglected):
* independent rear suspension
* front wheel drive

Overall, I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants a thorough understanding of how an why a car handles the way it does, and how handling can be improved. It is a good place to start if you want to optimise your car, or even consider designing your own.

A great look at different chassis design

This book goes into detail about custom chassis design. Specifically chassis made out of steel or aluminum tubing (space frame). Chapters are broken up into category of chassis design which shows and explains the strengths/weaknesses of each type of design. There is a somewhat negative tone about sprint car chassis design throughout the book, pretty much everything you shouldn't do when designing a chassis for safety and strength. Throughout the book they mention over and over again the importance of geometric shapes and designing to the strengths of each shape. The last chapter is about composite chassis (carbon fiber/fibreglass/kevlar). Overall I feel I have learned a great deal about designing a custom chassis and I feel fairly confident at actually getting to the point of creating my very own.

Book is okay. I am a beginning hot rod builder and maybe not the best rater based on my "one of a kind" build, however I found the major focus to be on race cars. as for building your own chassis, they "push" you to buy one done. I am dead set on doing it myself because I am using c4 rear corvette suspension and c5 front. there is no way around building my own. This book was only so helpful in my application.

Required Reading

Along with 'The Peter Principle' these two topped the NY Best seller list for very long periods when first published. Apparently it struck too many nerves with the NEA and in Bureaucrats everywhere, and now is effectively a banned book. Should be required reading (with Peter Principle) for a High School diploma. If you want to survive in the corporate world, without selling your soul, READ THEM Both!

Humorous psychological management

This book is a sequel to the "Peter Principle" and could be viewed as a book on management, applied psychology, or quotations. I gave it extra credit for breadth. It has some lovely quotes in addition to Dr. Peter's arguments. While I think he's noticed some things others have not, I think his argument is still linear. For example, a supervisor requires a different skill set. Thus the best worker does not necessarily make a decent supervisor and vice versa. He even alludes to this in the book:

History shows that most men who become great leaders had been incompetent followers. p. 106

However, this book is a fun read and has lots of fine quotes. Some are quite well known:

There is always an easy solution to every human problem-neat, plausible, and wrong. H. L. Mencken, p. 13; and

My way of joking is to tell the truth. It's the funniest joke in the world. George Bernard Shaw, p. 8

Some are humorous as well as wise:
