Michael A. Barsamian is a graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Stout with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Education and advanced graduate credits. He entered the field of Vocational Technical Education to prepare his students for their technical careers. Mr. Barsamian has taught board drafting, residential drafting, CAD drafting, and print reading for machine trades. In addition, he has provided consultation and customized training to machine shops and other related industries.
Richard Gizelbach is a former instructor of Machine Shop and Computer Numerical Control Programs at Gateway Colleges in Kenosha and Racine, Wisconsin. Mr. Gizelbach holds a Bachelor of Science and Master of Vocational Education degrees from the University of Wisconsin-Stout, along with a Specialist Certificate in Administrative Leadership from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. In addition, Mr. Gizelbach has worked as a machinist for Nordberg Mfg. in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He has developed and taught custom in-plant courses for Gateway and Milwaukee Technical College for several companies throughout southeastern Wisconsin. Mr. Gizelbach currently teaches courses and seminars on overhead and mobile cranes throughout the United States for Konecranes.

Mandatory purchase for the machinist course of program I'm taking at a Tech College. While taking the quizzes, we (class of 4 students and the instructor) all noticed wrong answers in the answer sheet provided to the instructor. Also, wish there was a way of getting the answer sheet so we can self review/check the chapters the instructors don't cover.

I would find another book

The book provides quizzes at the end of each chapter, yet the instructors book either has incorrect answers or the questions are so misleading that the key seems incorrect. This is unacceptable for a text book and embarrassing for the instructor using this book.. It doesn't take long for students to become frustrated with the text, which only hinders the learning process. We sometimes used an earlier 4th edition book to determine the correct answers to the 5th edition book. During the update from the 4th to the 5th edition, some of the exam questions were modified, with confusion as the result.

Even though the 4th edition book lacks the errors of the 5th edition, it is still very dry reading. As a student I felt that the text was somewhat convoluted and the chapters seemed a little rushed. I feel that 4th edition book does a adequate job of presenting print reading to students, but the 5th edition will have them pulling their hair out.

David Johnson earned a Bachelor's degree in Mathematics and a Bachelor's degree in Psychology (with an emphasis on Learning Theory), from the University of California at Santa Cruz, and a Master's degree in Mathematics from the University of California at Berkeley. After several years working as an academic counselor at Berkeley, he became a Professor of Mathematics at Diablo Valley College (DVC). Learning the foundation and fundamentals of networking is most important to passing the Network+, CCNA, MCSE, CAN, CIW, Inet+ exams and this book will get you started towards the certification success you are looking for.
Updated to cover Windows 2000 and Linux, this book is made for the classroom setting. The authors include hands-on projects and case projects to help the student learn in more than a self-study and lecture setting.
With topics like network concepts, design of VLANs and topologies, media, nics, protocols, architectures like 10 and 100 mpbs, token ring, apple talk, FDDI, CDDI, ATM and SONET, simple and complex networks, WANS, and troubleshooting, you have everything you need to gain a great foundation for the networking arena.
With everything in the book there is also review questions, chapter summaries and key terms for each chapter. Overall this is the perfect teaching guide.

Avoid This Book!

If you're new to networking and are looking for a book to adequately teach you the basics, avoid this one. Although the text does a fine job of introducing the essential topics, it provides five (5) types of information about these topics: Contradictory, Incorrect, Incomplete, Incomprehensible, and Decent. Since NE is a mnemonic and acronym driven subject, here are a few mnemonics to help you remember this: IDIoCy and DICey. The book is very poorly written; I read 3 other books on NE in the same time it took me to get through this book's garbled syntax and errata. The decent part is the summary tables provided throughout the book on cabling, architecture, protocols, etc. The "limited version" Transcender test CD provided with the text is OK, but it is essentially a teaser to get you to buy the "full version." Instead, I recommend the Sybex NE Study Guide (Chellis and Perkins), NE Unleashed (Sportack), and Accelerated MCSE NE Study Guide (Kinnaman). Using these, I just passed the 70-058 exam with a 900.

Awesome book for Network+ exam

While this book wasn't written specifically for CompTIA's Network+ exam, I found it extremely useful and informative. I have read many networking books, and this one explained the concepts very well, especially at what layers various hardware devices work. I bought it for a college networking class and kept it after the class was over because I thought it was so useful. I passed my Network+ exam a couple of weeks ago with the help of this book.

This is well written AND well edited. Alexa is primarily intuitive, the learning curve is yours, not Alexa's. This guide is thorough yet doesn't take ALL the fun of discovery from using the device. Good job!!

This is a good beginner's guide for someone just starting with thee Dot, or someone who is technologically hesitant. I'd have liked to see more tips in regards to IFTTT, but I understand the author wanting too avoid going down that rabbit hole.

I love my echodot

I absolutely love my echodot. It is so nice to ask questions and get answers without having to boot up the computer. I was lucky enough to see an Alexa before they hit the market. My ex-husbands cousin gives money to start up companies. He had one of the first Alexas' produces. We visited him and he demonstrated the machine. When the price of the dot came out and I could afford it, I had to have one. My ex-husband has one and so does our grandson. Wonderful product.

Demonic self-contempt

Night and Hope is a collection of seven stories that center around events and personalities in the Theresienstadt concentration camp, where the author, Arnost Lustig, was interned during the second world war. He is today most revered as a writer of screenplays, and often referred to as the creative mind behind the Czech New Wave Cinema, predicted on the macabre and gothic sensibilities that beset a troubled youth.
Fittingly in these short stories the horror of camp life and the Holocaust is gradually revealed through the eyes of people whose simplicity has been thwarted, and whose thoughts are being suffocated with hopelessness. Lustig has a verve for tarrying through the concerns of the individual, Sartrean in its emphasis, as an agent of his or her own destiny. He explores the nature of personal identity and a search for meaning in a world in which symbols, signs, institutions and language itself have been turned upside down; in which angst and an unfathomable abyss are kept at bay by insitent despair.
The way in which his characters - an old shopkeeper, a middle-aged salesman, and two young disillusioned boys among others - react under such conditions is presented as proof that in the face of destruction there is an unvanquished human essence that survives and thrives. This is a Kafkaesque starkness in the prose, adeptly rendered by George Theiner, as the common folks of the varied narratives confront a dreaded consciousness, something Lustig achieves by often shifting the center of the narrative. There is a morbid stalemate that overtakes each character, a quality that seems to distance the author from the more widely read Czech Kundera. This is existential fiction, rather than postmodern, and it is unique in the way it illustrates a demonic self-deception that breeds self-contempt in the simplicity of each portrayal.

Lustig, following the Soviet-led invasion of 1968 left the country to eventually settle in the US. After the fall of eastern European communism in 1989, he divided his time between Prague and Washington DC, where he continued to teach at the American University. After his retirement from the American University in 2003, he became a full-time resident of Prague. He was given an apartment in the Prague Castle by then President Vaclav Havel and honored for his contributions to Czech culture.

rise of corporate blogging

The attraction of this book is that it goes beyond describing the most common usages of blogs, like for social or political commentary. Bruns and Jacobs explain how blogs have also taken on corporate functionality. Some companies are building "dark" blogs, which are accessible only to its employees. But within this group, the blogs might typically allow the usual free for all contributory mode. One key idea being to encourage as much informal "conversation" as possible, across the company hierarchy. Unlike generic blogs, where authors can come from anywhere, in the corporate context, there is this hierarchy, which can often stifle participation in conventional face to face group meetings.

The book takes the reader beyond the often superficial explanations of how to use blogs. The latter can sometimes be focused on the mechanical aspects of getting to blog, or of finding interesting social blogs.

Although some blog researchers wrote sections, I find this very average. Most of the chapters seem to be opinion pieces instead of reporting on research. Some of the sections seem really trite at this point.

This book is a treasure. "Place Names of Hawaii" is an exceptional and important reference book for anyone who is interested in the Hawaiian language or anyone who just wants to know the meaning behind the names of streets, towns, valleys, land sections, fish ponds, craters, mountains, streams, islands, churches, buildings, et cetera. Every entry has an English translation of the Hawaiian name (when possible) as well as background information. It is invaluable reference book for any Hawaiian language student, but "Place Names" should also be in the library or book collection of everyone who lives in Hawai'i that has a library or book collection.

Place Names of Hawaii, and Supplement to the Third Edition of the Hawaiian-English Dictionary. was the 1966 first edition, it had about 1,125 entries and was described as a "Supplement to the Third Edition of the Hawaiian-English Dictionary. The Hawaiian Dictionary: Hawaiian-English, English-Hawaiian is perhaps the most important reference book on the Hawaiian language and "Place Names" is a product of the same team of Pukui/Elbert. This is the "revised and expanded edition" with about 4,000 entries. It should also be considered a supplement to the UH Hawaiian Dictionary, although it is also a stand alone reference and can be used and enjoyed all by itself.

The revised and expanded edition of "Place Names" has been available for more than 30 years. I can not understand how it is that I am the first to write a review for Amazon; considering how important this book is to Hawaii and its language. If you like this book, I also suggest Hawaiian Street Names: The Complete Guide to Oahu Street Names. It lists many streets that are not listed in "Place Names". Make sure you get the updated edition.

The Hawaiian language lives, not only in its spoken language, books, songs and chants, but also in its place names. I live on O'ahu and find it curious and confounding that many people who live here have no understanding, curiosity or appreciation about the place names that they deal with every day, like the street they live on or the town they live in. Many residents do not correctly pronounce O'ahu or Honolulu. The island is not "Awahu" nor is it the city of "Hanalulu" or "Hanolulu". Get this book so that you can learn and understand what those Hawaiian place names mean and help keep Hawaii a special and beautiful place.

About the Author

Tau Malachi's (Malachi eben Ha-Elijah's) spiritual journey began when he met the acquaintance of a Tau of the Sophian Tradition of Gnostic Christianity, Tau Elijah ben Miriam. He received the oral tradition of Sophian Gnosticism from Tau Elijah, and has been a student and practitioner of Gnostic Christianity for over thirty-five years. In 1983 he founded Sophia Fellowship as an expression of the tradition, and has been teaching and initiating others into Christian Gnosticism, Rosicrucian Philosophy and Christian Kabbalah since that time. He is an initiate of Ordo Sanctus Gnosis and serves as an Elder and Tau within the Sophian lineage.

Tau Malachi is also a Chevalier (a dubbed Knight) in the International Order of Chivalric Companions, a Martinist, and is an ordained and consecrated Independent Bishop. He is co-founder of The Gnostic Apostolic Church of Sophia and is among the leading exponents of Christian Gnosticism and Kabbalah in our times.

Along with his exploration of the Western Mystery Tradition, he has studied extensively in several Eastern Traditions, such as Vajrayana Buddhism and Vedanta, and he also studied within a Middle Eastern Tradition of Sufism, as well as becoming involved in Native American Shamanism. Though Gnostic Christianity has always been his heart's path.

Siobh�n Houston (Colorado) is the author of Invoking Mary Magdalene: Accessing the Wisdom of the Divine Feminine. Houston holds a master's degree from Harvard Divinity School and a doctorate in education from the Graduate Theological Foundation. Her writing has appeared in many periodicals, including Gnosis and Parabola.

Transformative!!

This book is a wonderful collection of healing practices found within the Sophian Tradition of Gnostic Christianity. What I found delightful about this book is that all the practices are based off an actual living tradition. (Hence there is an energy dimension within and behind these practices that can be experienced.) Tau Malachi and Siobhan Houston give you the keys to the power of transformation and healing!! Recommended to all those inclined to the healing arts.
