A Wonderfully Engaging Reading

It is quite a challenge to write a history of Buddhism, given the complex doctrinal diversification and the wide geographical and timeline spread. Andrew Skilton recognized the difficulty and set out to write a very readable concise history. He succeeded admirably in putting the doctrinal historical development within its geo-political context. He sticks to basic concepts, within the context of its development, and give references for further study of complex points.

if you are - like me - lost in the erudite scholarship of �tienne Lamotte's or Heinrich Dumoulin's books, this work is a lot more enjoyable reading. It is concise, full of interesting facts, and very engaging. It's the only History of Buddhism book that I can't put down and have to read in almost one sitting! It is wonderful as an introductory History of Buddhism book. Thank you Dr. Skilton!

Van Horn is quite mistaken

In Mr. Van Horn's reader review, he uses a "quote" which is nowhere to be found in the book. This is what Skilton actually says (pgs 67-68) about the brahma-viharas in the Theravadin tradition:

"The Theravadin School developed a rather austere orthodoxy, epitomized in the works of the 5th century scholastic Buddhagohosa, especially in his Visuddhi-magga, which on a theoretical level tends to exclude doctrines and practices incompatible with its preferred preoccupations. An example of this exclusion might be the meditational practices called the brahma-viharas, which in its Abhidamma and commentarial literature are relegated to an ancillary function only, whereas its own canon records instances which substantially refute this role. Canonical passages frequently contain editorial additions "demoting" the brahma-viharas but, where parallel texts survive from the Mahasanghika canon, it is interesting to note that the latter did not feel any need to qualify such practices in that way."

As you can see, Mr. Van Horn's characterization of this point is entirely incorrect, as is his assessment of the book on the whole. One wishes he would have asked himself why Skilton, a longtime Theravadin practitioner himself, would want to write a piece of "Mahayanist propaganda."

In fact, Skilton's book is a commendably thorough, superbly written, extensively footnoted overview of the subject, with a firm grasp of the issues at hand. I could not recommend it more highly.

A Real Goldmine

I was assigned this book for a course on Buddhism, and it was meant to be the more academic reading assigned. However, the book is well-written, few sentences wasted and every paragraph solid information. In fact, I understood Buddhism from a scholarly perspective, far away from the romanticised, enlightened account of spiritually-starved young ones. A true endeavor to study Buddhism as a religion, historically and doctrinally, is manifest here.

For example, the author provides an important overview of the state of India and Indian religion during Buddha's time, as well as an understanding of the languages used in that time. An etymological explanation of important terms is an extra treat for those interested-- words mean things. For example, the three sources of Buddhist knowledge are known as the "tripitaka"-- The Three Baskets. But the term is also a play on the Sanskrit for "pita", father. So another reading of "tripitaka" is "three from the father"-- Buddha.

Something else I enjoyed was the comparison between Buddhism and Hinduism. Those spiritually-starved Westerners idealize the dharmic religions are non-dogmatic, holistic, enlightened, above the fold... when Skilton shows in fact most of Buddhism's doctrines were direct refutations of Hindu doctrine at the time. For example, one of Buddha's most famous aphorisms is that there is no self... whereas Hinduism describes an atma (soul) that is at the essence of our being. Skilton lists several other points of contention between the two.

One thing I disagreed with was Skilton's harsh attitude toward Islam. Skilton almost defines the history of Muslims in India as an imperialist conquest that pillaged the natives, and brought about the end of Buddhism in India. Although this is reserved for the last chapter, and not an underlying theme which leaves the rest of his scholarship intact, one would assume Skilton has an anti-Muslim bias.

Great overview of grips

I am currently a brown belt within Karl Geis Kodokan Judo and this book has been a tremendous help in my training. I am currently using CoC grippers to enhance my gripping strength. This book is a valuable tool in learning different ways to engage grips, breaking them (defense), and different grip positions for various throws.

David Bradley is an associate professor of creative writing at the University of Oregon and the author of "South Street" and "The Chaneysville Incident", the latter of which won the PEN/Faulkner Award in 1982 and was a finalist for the National Book Award. The novel also earned Bradley an Academy Award for literature. Bradley has published essays, book reviews, and interviews in periodicals and newspapers including "Esquire", "Redbook", the "New York Times", the "Los Angeles Times", and the "New Yorker".

Full disclosure... I'm one of the contributors to the series of two books... though my name is incorrectly listed as "David LaRue" in more than one place! Doesn't matter... Some of the biggest names in magic and mentalism have contributed routines to these books... and they prove positively what some of us have known for a long time, mentalism plays great for kids! Few kid show books contain nearly this many routines... and they are all audience tested. Some routines are described a touch too briefly, but experienced performers will quickly understand the premise. Many rutines use easily available standard props, while others will require some construction. There are solid lessons in kid show performing contained here.

The amount of research Dr. Bob Curran puts into his books never ceases to amaze me, and Dark Fairies is no different. This book is absolutely packed full of information on the lore and history of the fae. He didn't just cover the basics on fairies, he covered it all. I had no idea whatsoever that the history of the fae was so incredibly vast and diverse.

In the book you learn about countless types of fae, where the belief in the fae originally came from and how it altered over time, the impact new religions had on fairy folklore, old beliefs and new, and much more.

My only issue with the book was that it read like a text book at times. There were moments that dragged, but that's to be expected in a non-fiction book. Overall, I was highly impressed by the research and amount of information in Dark Fairies.

A fascinating read for anyone excited by mythology

Tinkerbell is not the iconic fairy of myth. "Dark Fairies" looks into the history of fairies, and their roots as evil tricksters who were out to deceive and bring people to their doom, and to be feared. Looking at their roots in folklore and fairy tales, Dr. Bob Curran discusses how they developed and how they spun into the family friendly fairy of today. "Dark Fairies" is a fascinating read for anyone excited by mythology.

I really enjoy Bob Curran books and this one about bad fairies is no exception. I like his background of information and how he adds stories his books as well. I also like the illustrations that are found in Bob Curran's too.

An indispensible text for serious practioners

This is not a how-to, it is a how-to-understand. I own multiple editions of this book starting with the 3rd, when many of the examples referred to RBase. It won't tell you, with simple color diagrams and cut-and-paste examples, how to optimize your Oracle SQL queries or tune your DB/2 engine, but it will teach you the underlying principles of relational databases, from which the serious professional will be able to extrapolate. If you have the intelligence and stomach for it and you actually read it, it will serve you much better than the SQL in 24 hours picture books that some reviewers seem to be looking for -- it is a timeless and effective conceptual work on the subject that spans the evolution of commercial product implementations. Dilitantes and desperadoes, head for the Dummies aisle -- this one's not for you.

An Introduction for Software Engineers, not Users

Sorry, no full-color graphics, and no included disk full of fill-in-the-blank examples and wizards to build your contact list. This is an old-fashioned academic tome, not a how-to book or thinly-disguised marketing tool for some commercial database system.
I suppose the biggest criticism I could make of this book is that it overestimates the target audience. Unfortunately, many who see the title of this book assume that it will teach them how to work with current database products such as Oracle, or maybe SQL Server and Access. No, this book doesn't show you how to create an invoicing system for your bicycle shop, or a web content management system. What it will show you is the conceptual underpinning of the relational data model, how to understand relational database systems in general (not everything is SQL, you know), and provide some heavy insight into how relational databases should be designed.
In that sense, it can be considered an "introductory" book for software engineers, who might themselves create a new database management system. It can also be considered introductory for database administrators and systems programmers who are looking to expand their knowledge beyond the product-specific practical methods they have been exposed to. In other words, if you just want to know "how things are done" in your industry, don't read this book. If you want some insights into how things COULD be done much better, you might want to read this book.
So, while I might not recommend this book to a junior programmer tasked with creating his/her first web-based ordering system, I might recommend it to the company DBA or systems architect. Even more, I would recommend this book to anyone studying C/C++, and looking to start a career in software engineering, possibly to help create new database systems. This book doesn't discuss specific implementation in C++ or anything like that but it provides an excellent target feature set and language spec for development, as well as a clarification of the formal logic behind relational database management.

Best theoretical book on Database design ever!

I read this book for training as a senior DBA consultant and enjoyed CJ Date's excellent treatise on databases. This is the ultimate book on database theory. Like another reader commented its not how to get OCP/MCDBA whatever certifications but actually will make life better in the long run as a serious DBA pro. I now actually understand the basis of complex database topics such as cursors, data models, and concurrency/locking topics that previously are skimmed over in other books and training guides. Best book for a beginner and yeah its a bit dry and academic but CJ Date writes clearly. A MUST FOR SERIOUS COMPUTER SCIENCE STUDENTS!

In a series of short, sharp chapters, Richard Evans sets David Irving's methods alongside the historical record in order to illuminate the difference between responsible and irresponsible history. As an expert witness for the defense in last year's Irving-Lipstadt trial, Evans (history, Cambridge Univ.) was charged with determining whether David Irving was, as Deborah Lipstadt asserted, a Holocaust denier. Evans spent two years researching Irving's work, tracing his sources, and then evaluating his publications and public speeches. Moving easily from analysis of Irving's abuse of primary documents to a discussion of what constitutes legitimate historical methodology, Evans presents compelling proof that Irving is a Holocaust denier and why he should not be considered a legitimate member of the historical profession. Evans's depiction of the trial and of Irving's behavior in court is followed by an assessment of the implications of the judgment in Lipstadt's favor. Evans's point that some commentators seemed to forget that it was Irving who was attempting to silence Lipstadt, rather than academic historians and "Jewish interest groups" attempting to stifle free speech, is well worth remembering. Evans eloquently argues that what was really on trial was history itself. Fortunately, history won. Ironically, Evans's carefully documented book has not yet been published in the U.K., as Irving's threats to bring a libel suit have already caused one company to drop publication. When Deborah Lipstadt's Denying the Holocaust: The Growing Assault on Truth and Memory (1993), a groundbreaking book about the disturbing movement to refute the reality of the Holocaust, was published, one of the writers identified as a Holocaust denier, the Englishman David Irving, sued Lipstadt and her publisher, Penguin, for libel. Although Irving never earned a degree, he has written nearly 30 books about Hitler and other related subjects. His contention, therefore, was that Lipstadt had denigrated his work as a historian by accusing him of distorting the historical record to support his extreme anti-Semitic politics. The defense had to prove that Irving, in fact, had deliberately misrepresented the contents of relevant documents to conform to his sympathetic view of Hitler and his belief that nothing on the order of genocide occurred under Nazi rule. Evans, a Cambridge-based historian who specializes in modern German history, was retained by the defense as an expert witness, and he chronicles his arduous research effort with impressive lucidity. At question was the very bedrock of history: Is there such a thing as historical objectivity? Or, as Evans writes, "How do we know when a historian is telling the truth? . . . Wasn't it all a matter of interpretation?" Sensitive to these conundrums and the high emotional valence attached to the Holocaust, Evans was scrupulous in his examination of thousands of pages of documents, assiduously evaluating Irving's interpretation of such primary sources as Goebbels' diaries, always on the lookout for evidence of inaccuracies and bias. He found plenty, and he describes his discoveries with quiet and contagious excitement. By sharing his vast insider's knowledge and recounting his surreal experiences on the stand as Irving, who represented himself, conducted his chaotic cross-examinations, Evans enables readers to fully appreciate the significance of both Lipstadt's victory and Irving's exposure as exactly what he claimed not to be.
