About the Author

M. A. S. Abdel Haleem was born in Egypt, and learned the Qur'an by heart from childhood. He is Professor of Arabic and Islamic Studies at the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London. He is the Editor of the Journal of Qur'anic Studies.

One of the best English translations of the Quran

I ordered this translation to read and compare it alongside other English translations. This translation was published in 2010 and because it is a recent translation, it is written in contemporary English for the English-speaking audience. Even though I also like Pickthal and Yusuf Ali's translation but because they use Old English words, their translation creates a barrier between the text and the reader.

In the Introduction, the author also provides a very brief history of Islam, how the Quran was revealed to the Seal of the Prophets, style or language of the Quran, and select bibliography for further reading and understanding of the Quran. This makes it a perfect gift for anyone who knows little about Islam and wants to learn about it through its most authoritative book - the Quran.

I do not like personal commentary on the Quran and mixing Hadiths with the Quranic text. That is why I try to avoid those translations that have half-page long footnotes, thus adding their own words to the Divine Text. Though this translation also provides footnotes, the main difference between this translator's approach and others (when it comes to footnotes) is that these footnotes only reference other similar verses from the Quran itself without mingling Hadiths and other opinions.

As with all other translations, this one does not completely substitute the original Arabic revealed 14 centuries ago. So it is important that anyone who seriously wants to study the Quran should learn the Arabic of the Quran. Therefore, I also recommend Quranic dictionaries.

A Beautiful Translation

I will forever cherish this translation as it is my first personal copy of the Qur'an upon reverting to Islam. M.A.S. Abdel Haleem is a highly educated professor with degrees in Islamic and Arabic studies from various universities. Traditional Muslims will enjoy this translation as it is considered among the most accurate and best-selling ones according to al-Azhar University. New Muslims and non-Muslims alike will appreciate the useful features such as an introduction, an essay about the Prophet Muhammad's life, and notes.

Highly readable rendering into English, and a well-made book.

I have many translations of the Holy Qur'an. If what you want is to actually read this great book, there's no doubt in my mind that Haleem's is your best way in, hands down. Other translations might be more faithful--I honestly could not say. But Question #1 is: Will you read them, or get bogged down by archaic language? This one reads like English. Although there are cheaper editions available from Oxford, reviewers are complaining about type size and so on. This edition is a well-made book, with a binding sewn in signatures and a ribbon marker. At last, a Holy Qur'an, rendered into English, worthy to hold, and inviting to read.

This clearly written and well documented book is a broad overview of the interaction between European (including the USA and some Latin American nations) imperialism and technological innovation. Headrick's basic point is that significant innovations in technology, frequently but not always weapons technology, played a crucial facilitating role in various phases of European dominance of the globe. By the same token, limitations of technologies also defined the limits of European imperialism. Headrick covers the imperialism of the expansion of Early Modern Europe, the second great phase of Imperialism in the 19th century, and the 20th-21th century use of air power in some colonial and semi-colonial adventures. He is a thoughtful and knowledgeable analyst.

While well written and generally informative, the major drawback of this book is that much of information will be be known to even moderately knowledgeable readers. The advantages of European sailing vessels and cannon in the European entry into the Indian Ocean and Indonesian archipelago, the tactical advantages possessed by the Spanish conquistadors in the Western Hemisphere, the epidemiologic advantages of Europeans in the Americas and their disadvantages in Africa, and the role of the scientific/industrial revolution in 19th century imperialism are generally known well. The final part of the book, dealing with the ambiguous effects of air power in colonial adventures, is probably the most novel and interesting part of this book.

Once in a while, it is enjoyable to relive grand historic moments and refresh your general history knowledge. In particular, from a perspective, which may even claim to foretell the natural course of history.

Professor Daniel Headrick examines the period of imperial conquests from the 15th century to present. His book describes the impact of European technological developments on the policies of European monarchs, states and, of course, the deeds and behaviour of people, who carried them out. In a catching narrative the author argues, that throughout the course of history, technological advances and know-how allowed to Europeans to get a power over nature, which was required to gain power over peoples. But not always. Striking victories, as that of Cortés in Central America, turned into draws or even defeats, for example, in case of Portuguese blue-water navies against brown-water navies in Asia in the course of 16th century, or the attempts to penetrate Africa for almost four hundred years.

Headrick underlines, that the key to success was the ability of Europeans to capitalize on temporary advances in technology, but the role of human factors of conquerors, as it may seem at first glance, was not decisive. The technological gap, however, was not always large enough to continue imperial conquests. The power of the technology was ephermal. Most notably, when the adversaries had begun to assimilate European tactics and to use their weapons; the use of horses by Indians, probably, being one of the best examples. The era of industrial revolutions, again provided new incentives for further expansions. However, technology alone, Headrick argues, could not secure lasting power over peoples. He quotes Mao Zedung, who has said that: "Weapons are an important factor in war, but not the decisive factor; it is people, not things, that are decisive"(p.364).

In some chapters, and in choosing the examples to prove his point, the author has been somewhat selective. The whole chapter is devoted to the role of steamboats in expanding European control over vast territories, at the same time nothing being said about railways. Last two chapters are devoted to air control and bombing raids, which, according to Headrick, "more often reinforced the targeted populations will to fight" (p.363). At the same time, the author does not pay any regard to the destructive power of the atomic bomb, which in a swift, though most cruel manner cowed into submission remaining belligerents at the end of the second world war.

The author's conclusion at the end is really thought provoking. He says, that ever improving technology ensures that political and military defeats will come later, and at greater cost" (p.364), quoting Murray and Scales. One could partly agree. However, being aware, that the states, which own modern technologies, can also today win wars over peoples, which do not possess them, as effectively as did Cortés in Tenochtitlán. The difference is, that peoples are more interlinked than ever, which renders any act of barbarism in comparative and historical perspective of previous centuries, hardly imaginable.

All in all, a very fascinating book, which enlarged my horizon about imperial conquests from the most interesting perspective.

After a very detailed exposition of the mathematical background, it provides ready-to-implement algorithms for the group operations and computation of pairings. It explores methods for point counting and constructing curves with the complex multiplication method and provides the algorithms in an explicit manner. It also surveys generic methods to compute discrete logarithms and details index calculus methods for hyperelliptic curves. For some special curves the discrete logarithm problem can be transferred to an easier one; the consequences are explained and suggestions for good choices are given. The authors present applications to protocols for discrete-logarithm-based systems (including bilinear structures) and explain the use of elliptic and hyperelliptic curves in factorization and primality proving. Practical and theoretical aspects of side-channel attacks and countermeasures and a chapter devoted to (pseudo-)random number generation round off the exposition.

Very understandable overview of modern developments

Elliptic curve cryptography is now an entrenched field and has been subjected to an enormous amount of research in the last fifteen years. As soon as encryption schemes based on arithmetic in elliptic curves were proposed, it was natural to speculate on whether these schemes could be generalized to hyperelliptic curves or even general abelian varieties. This book gives an overview of what has been done, and even though most of the proofs are omitted, it does serve a need for those interested in the latest developments in the subject. This reviewer did not read the entire book, but concentrated instead on only a few parts that discussed developments in the last few years. Just skimming the book though will reveal that the authors have been very thorough in giving the reader the necessary mathematical background for a study of ECC and HECC cryptography. Readers needing more detailed background can consult the many references.

As expected, a substantial portion of the book is devoted to point counting methods. One of the methods discussed is the p-adic approach to counting the number of points on an elliptic curve over a field with a small characteristic, with the three most practical ones given the most attention. One of these, the Satoh algorithm, first computes the p-adic approximation of the canonical lift of an elliptic curve E over a finite field F(q), where q = p^d and p is a small prime. This involves lifting the j-invariants using a multivariate version of Newton's root finding algorithm. The trace of the Frobenius endomorphism must then be recovered, and this is done by using the action of the lift on a holomorphic differential on the lift. The resulting factoring problems are formidable, so instead the q-th Verschiebung, which is the dual isogeny to the Frobenius endomorphism is used. The Verschiebung is a separable morphism and the trace of an endomorphism is the trace of its dual. These facts are used to express the trace of the Frobenius endomorphism as a product (modulo q) of coefficients in Z(q). These coefficients are then calculated using certain polynomials.

Another algorithm using the p-adic approach to counting is the Arithmetic-Geometric-Mean (AGM) algorithm, which is discussed for the 2-adic case. As the name implies, this method is based on the AGM iteration, wherein a sequence of elliptic curves is constructed all of which are 2-isogenous to each other. This sequence is constructed so that it converges to the canonical lift of an ordinary elliptic curve, and then an explicit formula for the trace of the Frobenius map is derived. It is then shown how to extend the AGM algorithm to hyperelliptic curves by interpreting it as a special case of the Riemann duplication formula for theta functions.

The third p-adic algorithm discussed is called the Kedlaya algorithm and involves working with the affine curve associated to a hyperelliptic curve of genus g. Associated with this affine curve is its `dagger algebra,' the latter of which is discussed in the book and has its origins in the Monsky-Washnitzer cohomology for nonsingular affine curves over a finite field. This cohomology, which is currently listed under the classification of `rigid cohomology' is a cohomology for algebraic fields over fields of nonzero characteristic and can be considered to be a version of de Rham cohomology (in positive characteristic). In arises when one attempts to lift the Frobenius endomorphism on the coordinate ring of the curve to the coordinate ring of a lift of the curve. Taking the p-adic completion of the coordinate ring of the lift results in a de Rham cohomology which is even larger than the coordinate ring (the limit of exact differentials may not be exact), and so one works with a subring of the completion, which is called the `dagger ring.' The Frobenius endomorphism on the coordinate ring can then be lifted to a (Z(q)) endomorphism on the dagger ring. One can then define differentials of elements in the dagger ring, yielding a module over the dagger ring. The kernel and cokernel of this differential map can then be used to construct the zeroth and first Monsky-Washnitzer cohomology groups. The lift of the Frobenius endomorphism to the dagger ring induces an endomorphism on the cohomology groups, and this allows a Lefschetz fixed point formula to be proved, thus giving the number of rational points on the curve. The Kedlaya algorithm essentially follows this approach to do the point counting, but outputting the zeta function and working only for p greater than or equal to 3.

The book is not just a discussion on theoretical developments and computational algorithms, as an entire part of the book is devoted to applications. One of the applications discussed is that of `smart cards' which to date have been one of most widely used applications of cryptography. An entire chapter is spent on the hardware of smart cards, followed by one on how to attack the implementations of cryptosystems. One particular method for extracting the keys from inside a tamper-proof device involves the use of `power consumption analysis,' which is discussed in some detail in this chapter. The power consumption curve of the device or smart card is analyzed by the attacker, and this, coupled with an understanding of cryptographic algorithms, allows the keys to be compromised. Countermeasures against these attacks are discussed in the next chapter. The discussion is general enough in these chapters to give the motivated reader enough information to experiment with both attacking and with designing and testing effective countermeasures.

Very thorough, but...

don't be fooled: This is a book written by experts, for professionals. The introductory chapters "cover" the mathematical preliminaries, but if you're not already familiar with the concepts, you won't get enough help there to be able to digest the real content of the book, which is very detailed, and looks to be very complete.

This is a reference book, not a textbook.

I gave it a 5-star rating because it would not be fair to down-grade the book because of my own limitations. However, in all honesty, I think most people interested in Elliptic Curve Cryptography will want to be introduced at "lower altitude".

A seminal work in its field

When I first opened this book, a tear fell from my eye. Never in my life have I seen such mathematical beauty as summarized from this book. Elliptic curves, isogenies, complex multiplication, higher order abelian varieties, finite fields, point counting, Teichmuller modulus, p-adic numbers, and applications to cryptography: it's all there, and in one amazing book. And the algorithms are written so perfectly that it is easy to translate to the computer language of your choice. Ladies and gentlemen, I promise you, you will not be disappointed by this masterpiece.

From the first chapter, Dr. Sauro carefully explains the core concepts of systems biology. I appreciated the way that he did not assume that all symbolism was familiar to the reader but gave examples and descriptions. This is a textbook, so the reader will have a good opportunity to evaluate his/her understanding by looking at the end-of-chapter questions. I specifically wanted to have THIS book in my collection because it provides explicit examples of how to use the Tellurium modeling software.

Changed my perspective of Life & Love

Romance yet again! Given that my take on romance changed after reading plenty of beautiful books, I decided to go ahead and read this book. Thankfully, I don’t regret my decision at all.

I have a soft spot for writers from my city. After all there are not many of that lot. This particular writer obviously is a hardcore Chennaite and has portrayed the beauty of the city – The lush Anna University campus and the beautiful foliage of Theosophical society.

Moving on to the important part – The story line. The summary was a bit misleading. I was expecting “a miracle worker” swamiji who would “use his powers to cure people”. Alas! there came this super cool practical and logical swamiji. Initially the characters were a bit confusing. But as the story progressed, things cleared up.
The writer has done a commendable job in handling multiple story lines belonging to each character. The shift of times lines were also smooth and easy to follow. But more than the story line, the emotions were over powering. There was a practical connect thanks to realistic and heavy emotions – love, hurt, anger, sorrow, disappointment, helplessness and joy.

One character that is worth the mention is sawmiji. The concept of brining in a swamiji into a romance genre of sorts may sound rather absurd. But the writer made a brilliant decision to do that in the form of a corporate trainer. After all, swamijis handling corporate aren’t unheard.

It’s again obvious that the writer has some insight about the functioning of IT companies, their organisational culture and the usual “corporate training programs”.

My only complaint – the editing could have been a wee bit better.
Overall, the book was neat, logical and practical.

VERDICT: Go ahead pick it up. It might even change your perspective of life and love.

About the Author
Jeremy Ward is Professor of Respiratory Cell Physiology in the School of Medicine at King's College London. He is Treasurer of The Physiological Society and is one of our expert AAG authors. He has co-authored The Respiratory System AAG, The Cardiovascular System AAG, and assisted with Critical Care Medicine AAG.

Rob Clarke (1956-2004) was Senior Lecturer in Animal Physiology at Nottingham University and had extensive experience of teaching Physiology to a wide range of biomedical students.

Roger Linden is Professor of Craniofacial Biology and Head of the Academic Department of Physiology in the School of Biomedical Sciences at King's College London. He is qualified in both dental surgery and physiology and is involved in teaching and examining physiology and oral biology to medical, dental and biomedical students both in the UK and abroad.

Glance elsewhere!

If there is a shortcut to learning physiology, this is not it. After reading the other review, I am shocked! Anyhow, a great alternative is a video series from the teaching company, integrating anatomy, physiology, and pathology. It is taught by Dr. Goodman.
